The Story Sessions is open for Submissions

We are reviving the Story Sessions, we hope permanently! We are settling in to our Brockley Max venue, The Brockley Deli for a few months, with support from the Arts Council, and then we’ll see how its going.

The Story Sessions in a live literature event, with themed sessions. We run it like a folk club, so there are headliners, support acts and floor spots*.

We  have a ‘test bed’ section where you can try out a new piece on the audience just before the interval, and get written feedback.
*Floor spots: Flash from the Floor a maximum of 100 words on theme, immediately after the interval. Just turn up with your 100 words and let us know you want to read, or write something in the interval, if inspiration strikes.

We have 4 sessions lined up over the next nine months:

16/11/2016 Freedom Tales deadline 02/11/16 EXTENDED to 11/11/16 (midnight)

18/01/2017 Winter Tales deadline 04/01/17

15/03/2017 Retelling Tales (Legend and Fable) deadline 01/03/17

17/05/2017 Fantastic Tales (Fantasy) deadline 03/05/17

We are looking for STORIES first and foremost, although we will consider very good poems. We are not interested in non-fiction of any kind.

ABSOLUTE maximum 2000 words, but we are happy with  a lot shorter as it means more people can read.

This can be previously published work as it will not lead to a book, and we encourage authors from London and environs, who have a new book to promote, to offer us something suitable to the theme, but unpublished work also welcome. So if you have something on theme and can come and read it on the day, let’s hear from you.

Apply through our submittable account. (If you do it other ways I lose the emails and then people get cross.)

Call Out for Musicians for Solstice Shorts Shortest Day

This call out is for acoustic music to be performed at the Solstice Shorts Festival in Greenwich, London, on 21st December 2016. You will need to be available to perform!!
Deadline for submission 23:59, 31 August 2016

The theme is Shortest Day.

Please stick to it, but do not use this as your title (it makes it very difficult to shortlist!)
This is the second part of an earlier call out, and this part is to RESPOND to short stories and poems for which you will be sent a link – (the reason the link is not here is to respect the copyright of the writers, only people actively seeking to respond to the call out will have access to it.) Contact us to ask for the link.
How you choose to interpret shortest day in relation to the writing is entirely up to you, but it might be that you set (some of) the words to original music, or you might propose a traditional piece that would sit well with a story, or compose music that fits with the mood… please remember you need to be able to perform it!
Successful pieces will be performed at the 3rd Solstice Shorts Festival on 21st December 2016 in Greenwich, London. Performers are paid. We  video/ record so that there is a permanent record available. Please tell us which piece of writing inspired you, so that we can curate the music and story/poem alongside, or even together.
send us: mp3, wmv, mp4, avi; plus score if you want to as pdf; words if relevant as pdf, rtf, txt, doc, docx.
When you are ready, submit here.

Have fun.

Upcoming Events for September part 1

We are gradually weaning ourselves away from London, and will be taking part in the Berkhampsted Speakeasy which is in Berkhampsted, at The Greene Room, The Kings Arms, 147 High Street, Berkhamsted on Wednesday 25th September 7pm for 7.45.

BerkoSpeakEasy use actors to perform stories as though they were plays so a bit like Liars’ League, but with movement.  They are performing Rosalind StoppsThe Suitcase (From London Lies) as one of their playlets this month.
