Arachne Press Ten Years of Book Cover Art

Arachne Press: Ten years of Book Cover Art

Online Exhibition Catalogue

Arachne Press is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and with it, successful collaborations with artists on the covers of their books. We will be holding an exhibition with our long time collaborators the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in Greenwich SE10. from January 19th to February 15th, with a private view on the evening of January 18th.

The Gallery is at

10 Stockwell Street London SE10 9BD accessed via the University of Greenwich reception next door – there is a door, but it is for fire escape only! The Gallery is open Tuesday-Friday: 11am-5pm Saturday: 11am-4pm

We will be exhibiting some of the original art that was licenced/ commissioned, and for the commissions, some of the drafts the work went through to end up with the cover, and some of the objects that inspired covers.

Back in 2012 all the publishing chat was about how eBooks were going to replace print, but Arachne founder Cherry Potts was certain that all that would disappear would be ugly, badly made books.

Right from the start the intention was that Arachne’s books would be beautiful, and that where possible, artists would be used, and the cover image would wrap all the way round the book.

When choosing a manuscript, if Cherry starts planning the cover before she’s finished reading, the book is almost certainly going to be published, which means that the search for the right artist is as important as the search for new writing.

Initially that meant licencing existing images, but quickly moved on to commissioning as well. Arachne Press has worked with some of our artists regularly, [Kevin Threlfall, Fiona Humphrey, Gordy Wright]  others have been suggested by the authors for a particular project [Paul Summers, Camille Smethwick, Rachel Marsh]; and sometimes, when the image in her head is so clear nothing else will do, Cherry rolls up her sleeves and makes a cover herself. For more details of all our cover artists take a look at our artists page.

Lockdown Interviews: no29 Karen Boissonneault-Gauthier interviewed by David Mathews

Twenty-ninth  in a series of author-to-author interviews to distract them, and you, from lockdown torpor.

David Mathews interviews Karen Boissonneault-Gauthier (Noon, No Spider Harmed in the Making of this Book) about her writing, photography and book design work, which includes the cover for No Spider Harmed…

Preorder No Spider Harmed… – out 8th August for our eighth anniversary, when we will be launching online at 8pm BST, with readings from authors, including David.

last chance to see…

Our Cover Artists Exhibition at Lauderdale House closes soon, your last chance to see the pictures ‘in the flesh’ is this Sunday. There have been modest sales, but we’d really like all the artists to go away with at least one picture sold. They are a brilliant, diverse lot, and the exhibition looks terrific (though I say it myself, who curated and hung most of it!)

If you are thinking, I can’t possibly afford a piece of original art, then two of the artists have limited edition books with their illustrations in, for a very modest sum, which will obviously be an investment for when they are famous… more info in the catalogue

Obviously you can buy direct from the artists at any time, contact details for all of them here but there is something about seeing their work together, on the wall, that is rather special!

Voting for Lovers’ Lies Covers

Aside

I managed to leave some designs off yesterday – they are there now,  Apologies to the artists I missed – there are so many designs some of them got into the Mosaic folder by mistake.  If your design is still missing it may be because the design did not meet the brief, or because it is unsuitable for public display. If this is the case I will be in touch. I thought at first the votes had been lost, but they havent.so need to try to vote again.

Mosaic of Air designs are now up.

Typesetting is almost finished and proofs will be going out to the authors by the end of the week.

Cover designs have started coming in, and there are some wonderful, and some weird & wonderful, interpretations of the brief. (Katy! Have Liars’ League done a Weird & Wonderful theme yet?)  In fact, some covers could (with tweaking of the text elements) do for either book, and we will consider them under both headings. Sadly, some artists have not read the brief, and will have to be excluded for not meeting the basic criteria. The deadline, if you are planning of putting in  a cover design entry is 8am THIS SATURDAY!

Enquiries for Lovers’ Lies Cover competition hit 100

Aside

Yes, 100 artist/designers  have asked about the competition to design the covers for our next two books, Lovers’ Lies and Mosaic of Air.

Some people have sent links to their websites or portfolio attachments, and there’s a wide range of styles out there. It’s very exciting, and distracting, I’m supposed to be doing the expenses darn it and people keep wafting art across my computer screen!

We will post the entries as soon after the 1st December Deadline as possible, and you can then vote to choose a shortlist of 6 for each title.  Then its down to the authors to choose the winners.
